95 % of expatriates in the Emirates expect their financial situation to improve in 2024

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to attract a large expatriate community. In 2024, these foreign residents show a a significant improvement in their financial situation. This positive trend warrants further investigation in order to understand what makes life in the UAE so advantageous for those who live there – whether through higher salaries, investment opportunities or effective management of their personal finances.

A significant improvement in revenue

The main reason for this economic improvement lies in the’wage increases. A significant proportion of the expatriates surveyed reported having received substantial pay rises over the past year. This has not only improved their purchasing power but also strengthened their sense of financial security.

When it comes to remuneration, local and international companies based in the UAE appear to recognise the value contributed by expatriate workers. This recognition often takes the form of regular and competitive pay rises.

Successful investments

As well as pay rises, expatriates also benefit from a range of investment opportunities available in the country. According to recent surveys, nearly 35 % of expatriates have seen their investment portfolios perform impressively. This performance is not limited to a single type of investment, but extends across several sectors, including the stock market, mutual funds and other sophisticated financial options.

On the other hand, around 30 % of expatriates attribute their recent financial success to profitable property investments. The UAE offers a dynamic and rapidly expanding property market, with opportunities in both the residential and commercial sectors.

Increasing savings for future stability

Saving is also a key part of the financial strategy for expatriates living in the UAE. For many, building up their savings has become a top priority. These efforts are essential to ensure a long-term financial stability, particularly in the face of global economic uncertainties.

Nearly 60 % of expatriates are actively setting aside part of their income, thereby building up a financial safety net. Whether it is to cope with potential emergencies, plan for the future or look forward to a comfortable retirement, this focus on saving plays a key role in their sense of financial security.

Email from the pension fund

With more substantial savings comes, too, the growth of pension fund. Many expatriates use long-term investment strategies to maximise their retirement savings. Having a well-funded pension pot means that these individuals can look to the future with peace of mind, knowing that they are financially prepared for their post-work years.

Proactive personal finance management

Modern technology makes it much easier to manage personal finances. In the UAE, a majority of expatriates – 60 % – have adopted apps to track their spending and manage their budget. Compared with 46 % globally, this demonstrates a higher uptake of digital tools amongst expatriates living in the UAE.

These apps offer a range of useful features, such as alerts when you go over budget, detailed spending reports and personalised recommendations. Thanks to these tools, expats can keep a tight grip on their finances, avoid getting into debt and plan effectively for the future.

Local benefits to support personal finance

The government and local authorities also play a crucial role in improving the financial well-being of expatriates. Initiatives to support small businesses, care services tailored to the needs of older people, and foreign investment in key sectors such as food and drink create an environment conducive to economic growth.

These measures show that the UAE authorities are not content merely to attract foreign talent, but are actively working to create favourable conditions for their financial prosperity. Robust regulatory frameworks and attractive tax policies further reinforce this positive momentum.

A comparison with expatriates elsewhere in the world

It is interesting to note that expatriates based in the United Arab Emirates consider themselves to be significantly better off financially than those living elsewhere in the world. Whilst 95 % of expatriates in the UAE report a improvement in their financial situation, only 60 % of expatriates worldwide share this sense of financial well-being.

This contrast highlights the’the UAE’s unique appeal for expatriate workers. From an economic perspective, the UAE appears to be a haven of stability and prosperity compared with other popular destinations amongst expatriates.

Ease of integration and quality of life

As well as the financial benefits, the UAE offers a high quality of life which attracts many international expats. Modern infrastructure, a high level of security and high-quality public services are among the reasons why many professionals choose to settle here.

Whether it is their sunny climate, their diverse cultural activities or their world-renowned shopping centres, the UAE offers a pleasant place to live that complements the financial benefits already mentioned.

Promising prospects for the future

As the UAE continues its rapid economic development, the prospects for expatriates continue to look promising. The There are still plenty of varied career opportunities, and government initiatives are aimed at making the country even more attractive to talent from abroad.

It therefore seems likely that the UAE’s popularity as a preferred destination for expatriates will remain strong in the years to come, underpinned by favourable economic conditions and appropriate policies.
