Bank accounts for tourists in the UAE: the digital revolution is coming
- Oracle
Visitors to the Emirates can now open a local bank account in a matter of minutes, directly from their mobile phones. This new development is making a real difference to the experience of the millions of tourists who visit the country every year.
Tourism Identity: how it works
The initiative was launched jointly by the Central Bank of the UAE, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP) and the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB). Upon arrival, you will be issued with a secure digital identity using biometrics and facial recognition.
This digital identity is not just about opening an account. It connects you directly to the local financial ecosystem, as part of the national cashless payment strategy. All you need is your passport and a few minutes. No queuing at the branch, no pile of documents to provide.
Security is based on algorithms that analyse your biometric data in real time. The risk of fraud is eliminated at source, and administrative procedures are kept to an absolute minimum.
Jaywan and Aani: two payment systems worth knowing about
Your travel account gives you access to Jaywan, the domestic card network. You can use local debit and prepaid cards with reduced fees at all retailers across the country. Each transaction costs you less than it would with a foreign card.
Aani goes one step further. This instant payment platform, developed by the Central Bank and managed by Al Etihad Payments, allows you to transfer money in a matter of seconds. A phone number, an email address or a QR code: that’s all you need.
No more currency exchange hassles or international bank charges. You enjoy the same benefits as residents when making your everyday purchases.
The ADCB account in detail
The dirham savings account does not require a minimum opening balance. The digital debit card is activated instantly within the app and allows for immediate payments. All account management is carried out via the app: complaints, balance enquiries and service requests.
The card is valid only within the UAE. For international transfers, you must register a bank account in your name in your country of residence. If you would like a physical card, uBank kiosks located throughout the country can issue one.
Who is eligible and how
You must be of legal age and physically present in the Emirates on a valid tourist or visitor visa. 96-hour transit visas are not accepted: they are too short to justify opening an account.
The process involves just a few steps on your smartphone: download the ADCB app, select the tourist account, scan your passport, complete the biometric verification, and fill in your personal details. Your digital card is ready to use straight away.
How much does it cost?
There is a monthly fee of 25 dirhams, which is debited automatically. This fee is waived if you maintain a balance of at least 2,500 dirhams. For a short stay, the cost is modest given the benefits.
There are a few restrictions associated with the service: no joint accounts, and no access to other ADCB banking products whilst the tourist account is active. At the end of your stay (or if you are granted a residence visa), the account will close automatically and your balance will be transferred to the international account you have specified.
