However, the spectacular performance of the cities in the UAE shows that fast-growing cities can compete with the long-established capitals of innovation.

According to the IMD, a smart city is one that manages to strike a balance between economic performance, technological innovation, environmental sustainability and social inclusion. It is precisely this approach that Dubai and Abu Dhabi have successfully developed.

Although the Emirates already offer ambitious and well-structured development models, the question of equity in access to housing could become a key factor in maintaining their position in future rankings.
